Week of the Arts

15-March-2014
On Friday the Elementary schools in Bogota ended their Week of the Arts program.  This is a celebration of some of the many artistic disciplines there are, and how art in everyday life can help students learn.  During the week the Students at Bixby & Steen school saw how art can teach about various parts of the world with the High School Multi-Cultural club  performances of  song & dances from Disney's Movie  that are set in different countries. Along with the craftsmanship of making leather goods from the staff of Pork Choppers on Queen Anne Rd.
On the final day Bixby school started by Presenting their Citizenship awards to one winner from each class. Then  the students were given a preview of the High School  Music Dept. production of " Seussical"  along with a song from the High School's female Barber Shop  singers the "La-De-Da's" Choir Director Wendy Hughes showed the different parts of song through the Members of "La-De-Da's". Then she described how any story , even a " kids" story like those from Dr. Seuss can be turned into songs. Before the Jazz Bands presentation Lydia Gilbert took a moment to talk about how she enjoyed being in the High School Production when she attended Bogota High School. And when recently her essay on her favorite teacher was the Choir she study with won Bixby an award she & the Principal Robert Watts agreed to donated half the winning to this year production.
Barry McCann then showed the the different instruments of the Jazz band and how some song may be written for a certain  instruments they can be arranged to included the whole band. The Jazz band then played a variety of styles from the Beatles to movie themes all set to a Jazz beat. Before the show ended the Band and the Actors worked together to giving as many students a chance to dance with the cast in front of the stage. Then Mr. McCann invited Dr. Watts a turn on the drums to the approval of his Students.
For the afternoon both the Jazz band & the cast of "Seussical" moved on to Steen School.  Before those performances the Students & teachers were read a letter from  Patricia Burns a former teacher at Bixby. Reading the letter was current Steen teachers and Ms. Burns Daughter  Mrs. Geraghty. In the letter Mrs. Burn was sorry that she could not make any of the events this year. But she delighted to know that the Week of the Arts she started 24 years ago is still being celebrated. Ms. Burn's letter continued to say that she wanted to thank the Teachers, Parent,& Performers that keep Week of the Arts going on every year. She wanted to give the Student a special thank-you for keeping the arts alive at home & in school. The show was the same at Bixby except for the ending which had all the Student join the cast in dancing and many form a long Conga line encircling half  the gym.
