Bogota Borough Council

 23-January -2022

On Thursday-20-January the Bogota Borough Council held their second meeting for the month of January.  After the public comment session the council had a discussion on the proposed Recreation Centre in Olsen Park. It was announced that 12 bids from contractors for the construction had been received. The lowest bid  was approximately $8.08 million, and most of the others were within the same price range. Council will not vote on which bid to accept until the financing  has been approved. The Borough was already approved a Bond  Ordinance of $4.6 million dollars pay for the the cost of this project. With the bids now on the record, the Borough asked for an increase of the Municipal bond ordinance which will allow for additional finance for the project. Other funding is coming from the Community Enhancement program for the Atwater development.  The council will introduce an ordinance to add an additional $600,000  to the current bond. It is needed that this cover possible change orders and the addinal cost of adding water lines to the site.
Then the council voted on the items on the Consent Agenda. All the resolution passed with the majority them by unanimous vote. Three were passed by a 4-2 vote and one passed by a 5-1 vote.  The resolutions of note were to hire the Borough Professional for the upcoming year.  Other items passed  were two ordinances that will be open for public discussion at the next council meeting on Thursday-3-February. This will included the ordinance to appropriate an additional sum for construction of the proposed Recreation Center.
The next Bogota Borough Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday-3-February at 7:30p.
This will be held online with log-in information to follow. For more information or to view the agenda please visit their website at: www.bogotaonline.org

 21-January-2022
On Tuesday-18-January the Bogota Board of Education held their second meeting for the month of January. In his report Superintendent Mr Damian Kennedy presented the results of the School District testing for 2021. These test were evaluations of how much support is needed in the grade levels from fourth grade to High School Seniors. The Student were tested on a variety of subjects  in the English Language Arts, Math, and Science.
At the end of the presentation Superintendent Kennedy explained some the steps the district should enact to give Students support in whichever subject they require assistance Some examples are:
In Math: Create math data teams in, Math 8, Algebra I & II, Geometry. Create clear goals of the teams. Identify standards gaps, revise scope and sequence, improve standards with issues, improve classroom instruction routines. Determine which student standards are deficient or not taught.
In Science: Create science data teams in High School, Middle, and Elementary. Identify Start Strong data and question analysis. Determine which student standards are deficient or not taught.
In Early Reading and Literacy: Continue to screen, identify, and support struggling reading in grades K-2. Provide immediate RTI support to improve reading proficiency. Monitor progress of struggling readers multiple times a year. Provide evidence based interventions through RTI, after school and summer programming.
Superintendent Kennedy again stressed that the more proficient  younger and ESL Students  in  reading skills and comprehension the more they will perform in Math and Science classes.
There was then a discussion by the Trustees on what other steps can be taken, including the involvement of the Student’s family in not only helping the Students themselves, but  to become active with the Facility and Staff on finding ways to assist Students  in learning.
When the Trustees moved to the consent agenda all items were passed by a unanimous vote. Items of note were the approval of extended Family leave for one of the Teachers. Another item was Approval of Participation in the Sustainable Jersey for Schools Certification Program.

Bogota Basketball

 20-January-2022
On Wednesday-19- January the Bogota Men's Basketball Bucs traveled to Saddle River Day School to play the Rebels.
Bogota would suffer a 66 to 47 loss. The Bucs Evan Meberg had a game high with 26, Points. Parker Neuenhaus had 18  Points leading the Rebels. Richard Machado for Saddle River Day School with Daniel Trinidad Vincent Ducut for Bogota all had game highs with 2 Three Point Baskets each.
Bogota's record is now  2-7. The next play on Friday-21-January when the host Hawthorne  Christian Academy. This will take played on the Jay Mahoney Court at Speary Gym, with the tip-off scheduled for 6:00p.
The Bogota Middle School Basketball Bucs opened their 2022 season against the Cliffside Park Red Raiders. This was played on the Bogota Middle School gym and mark the first true home game for the Middle School teams.
The Lady Bucs played first, The would suffer a  37-20 loss. The Boys Basketball Bucs were up next. The new home venue showed it differences at the start of the game.  The gym itself is a small tighter playing area. This cause concern when looking to keep the ball in play close to the out of bound lines, with the wall only feet away. Another problem is the lower ceiling in the gym.  This was made evident on the first few  attempts at taking a Three Point Basket. The arc of the ball found its way to hit, or just grace, the roof. This was ruled as out of bounds and cause a turn over.
By the final quater the players adjusted their shooting and attempts from beyond the arc were finding the bottom of the net. This allowed the Bucs to keep the game close. However Cliffside Park also adjusted enough to win the game 50-45.
The Middle School teams next play on Friday-21-January when they host Leonia. This will be played at the Middle School Gym. The Lady Bucs game will start at 4:15p With the Boys game to follow.
