26-February-2022

On Wednesday-23-February Bogota High School hosted a workshop on helping Parents learn about what type of legal and illegal substance available for use  by minors. This was held in the Bogota High School Auditorium and was presented by Kathy Viola of The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources (TCADR). Before the lecture started, attendees were invited to come on stage and look at a simulated Student’s bedroom. This was intended to show how, and where, Students can hide many items to prevent discovery by an Adult. The main goal was to show how paraphernalia can be made to look like common objects.  Pens, markers,  flash-drives, and even incorporated into clothing items. The display also included items that can be used to hide other controlled substances. These included beverage cans, & bottles, potato chip containers, sports equipment, books, and toys which could have hidden compartments built in.
The presentation began with the explanation of brain development in Humans. The chart provided showed that, in Humans, the brain does not become fully developed until a person is in their early 20’s. This is when the prefrontal cortex finishes maturing.  This is the area that is most  involved in controlling impulses and decision-making. Smoking and Alcohol consumption before the ages of  21 or 22 slows, and may even reduce, proper brain growth and development.  Along with other factors included lack of sleep, and poor nutrition can also affect the brain’s development. It was explained that how the use of stimulus can have an effect on Humans.
Ms. Viola went on to discuss the wide number of different types of available narcotics. From readily available items such as cigarettes, alcohol and prescription drugs to non regulated  narcotics. In the 20th century companies were shown to have been targeting High School Students, and younger, along with ethnic communities with their advertising. This lead to a ban on cigarettes ads on public media and the use of cartoon images in other types of ads.  Some steps being made include when the  Bogota Council has passed an ordinance limiting the sale of “Nicotine Products” within the Borough. This comes with an increase licensing fee to offer these products for purchase. Signage stating that “Nicotine Products” are only to be sold to anyone over the age of 21 with proper identification. And a large fine for anyone, or business, in violation of the law. Funds from these fees are scheduled to be used to help fund education and treatment groups like the Bogota Advisory Committee on Substance Abuse (BACSA) to aid them with education on ways to prevent drug and alcohol abuse. Along with providing information for anyone who may need help with problems related to drugs and alcohol.
Another point made by Ms.Viola, is to have Parents become more aware of the choices to Students, no matter what age, that are available. With the idea of just engaging in conversation, either a formal talk, or routine questions of how a Student day is encouraged. This would be a way to learn about what the Student knows and feels about different topics that can affect their development. This is better to be done in a non confrontational way and letting the Student talk about how they feel on the subject, and not have an Adult opinion forced on them.  Another idea presented was to become interested in things they do & believe. This could show a Student that a Parent trying to understand their opinion on these topics themselves.  Also Parents needs to be aware of who their friends are, and keeping an eye out for physical and emotional changes. A Parent should also asked about what their Children want to do with their free time. If a problem seems to be starting, let them know about your concerns, again, in a non-confrontational way, and to be prepared to assist and listen to their feeling. Which should be done by being supportive, as well as being a Parent who wants to protect their Children.
Also Ms.Viola mention in case of a scenario of any type overdose occurring what can be done to aid the victim. TCADR has a 24 hour Hotline at 201-589-2976 that can be call, or by text, to aid in finding service and support for addiction with recovery specialist.

Bogota Basketball

 25-February-2022
Results of Bogota Varsity Basketball from Thursday-24-February.
The Men's Basketball Bucs traveled to Wallington to play the Panthers. Wallington took an early lead and had a 19-13 advantage after 8 minutes. The Bogota defense then slowed the Panthers scoring in the second quarter. Just over the halfway point of the quarter the Bucs took over the lead, which they never gave up. By halftime Bogota was ahead by the score of 35-28. After the restart Bogota would continue scoring at a double digit pace and won the game by the score of 73-45.
Bogota's Evan Meberg led all scorers with 31 Points. Mr. Meberg now finishes his High School career in 7th place on the Bucs all time scoring list with 1,218 Points. He also had 3 Three Point Baskets along with teammate Vincent Ducut.  Wallington was lead by Jordan Vega with 26 points, including a game high of 4 Three Point Baskets. Bogota finishes their season with a record of 9-12
The Lady Bucs hosted the Wood-Ridge Lady Blue Devils on the Jay Mahoney Court in Speary Gym. Bogota led at the end of the first quarter by the score of 14-10. In the second quarter the Lady Bucs, at one time, held a 12 lead. By halftime the Lady Blue Devils cut the deficit to only three points. After the restart Wallington scored the first five points and pulled ahead 29-27. By the three quarter time mark they had a 38-35 advantage. Bogota would tie the game at 39 apiece early in the final quarter. Close to the five minutes left in the game the Lady Bucs retook the lead  41-40. They would still be in front by three point with under 5 seconds left in the game. A last chance three point attempt by Wallington was missed, but the shooter was fouled on the play. All three foul shots did not go into the net, and Bogota held on for a 49-46 win.
Wallington's Victoria Drotos had a game high of 21 Points, including 5 Three Point baskets.
Ashley Bautista led the Lady Bucs with 17 Points with 1 Three Point Basket. Maryann Gesmundo also had 1 Three Point Basket.
The Lady Bucs finishes their season with a record of  6-15.

Bogota Planning Board

 24-February-2022
On Tuesday-21-February the Bogota Borough Planning Board pass a resolution to instruct Planning Board Attorney Mr. Kevin Kelly to create a resolution for the approval of the Bogota component of  what is known as the 30 Cross St Project. This project if  approved will turn the current Bogota Golf Centre site into a warehouse, distribution, or light manufacturing complex. This is an area located between the NYSW Railroad tracks and the Hackensack River, and is shared by the Borough of Bogota, closest to Cross St, in the Northern half and by the Village of Ridgefield Park, by Interstate 80, to the South.  This application for use is being file by the Hampshire Venture Partners LLC.
The Bogota Planning Board needs to approve the plans for Building #2, to the north. This building will be 89,130 sq ft in total. 83,630 sq ft will be warehousing and 5,500 sq ft of offices. There will 10 loading docks and parking spaces for 145 cars.  The primary access will be from Cross St with three driveways. A central entrance for trucks and deliveries, and two small entrances to the North and the South for cars. The entrances will be large enough to allow access by all emergency vehicles.
Hampshire Venture will also create a Public River Walk along the shore of the Hackensack River. This will have a new sidewalk connection over the railway tracks and meet with the existing Cross St sidewalk. The track crossing at Cross St. will still be at grade level, but widen to 43 ft. It will now have crossing gates for both lanes of traffic and secondary gates for pedestrian traffic. Industrial Ave will be moved 3 ft to the west and widen to 36 ft.  Hampshire Venture  will re-build and maintain Industrial Ave from the NYSW Crossing to within Ridgefield Park. As part of the agreement Hampshire Venture will repave Cross St before the Building receives their Certificate of Occupancy. Industrial Ave will also be constructed with a wider turning radius to allow for longer trucks crossing over the railroad tracks.
The River Walk will be 12 ft wide with fencing and wall for safety. It will be lighted, planned with native trees & bushes, public benches, with trash receptacles and four dedicate parking spots for River Walk users. The walk will be open from Dawn to Dust. The lighting will be LED fixture and placed as to not allow ambient light to be seen from the residential building near by.
The parking lot will be graded to allow for drainage towards the river, with outflow pipe to the river. This pipe will also be equipped with a check valve to prevent river flooding onto the property. The parking lot will also be equipped with 4 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for employee use. Building #1 will have a sewer connection into the sewer system for Building #2. And is dependent on County jurisdiction and demands. Mechanical equipment on top of Building #2 will be placed behind fencing in-order to be hidden from the River St. level.
The resolution for Building #2 is schedule to be formally presented to the Planning Board at their meeting on Tuesday-22-March. Time, date, and location are subject to change.
After the Bogota Planning Board approves the Hampshire Venture request the plans for warehouse #1 will be present to the Ridgefield Park Planning Board.
