Bat Stock 2022

 26-September-2022

Sunday-25-September was the final day of Batstock 2022. It was held at the Debonair Dance Hall in Teaneck, NJ. This was hosted by Joseph D'Angeli and the Wildlife Conservation and Educational Center. Batstock is an event started to raise awareness of a condition call "White Nose Syndrome" (WNS) that is affecting bats in North America. This is a disease that infects bats as they are trying to hibernate for the winter. The fungus that affects the bats causes them to awake from their hibernation and start to fly around in mid-winter. This will lead to bats freezing from the cold or starve to death from the lack of food available.
The fungus also damages some of the connective tissue, muscle, and skin of those bats infected. First notice in 2006 WNS, in Upstate New York, has affected millions of bats reducing their population, as the number of bat declines there is a raise in the mosquito population.
With a decline in the bat population therehas been an increase in the growth of many flying insects including moths, beetles, and mosquitoes. An increase of these insects can affect an area in multiple ways. Some effects can be the destruction of crops, and native plants along with the spreading of human disease like " West Nile Virus" and general discomfort from mosquitos' bites.
Money raised from Batstock will go to help fund research in finding a cure for WNS. The other goal of Batstock is to educate and inform the public of the value of bat to the local eco-system and how many ideas of bat are not based on facts.
The Wildlife Conservation and Educational Center had a display set-up for information on what can be done to stabilize and regrow the local bat population. Various bat themed merchandise was available for purchase, including bat houses which can be added to residential property which will provide a safe hibernation place for bats in the winter month. Also on display was artwork by Students of the Marble Jam Center. These were painting of animals from around the world.
The event opened with a performance by: "Dirty Blonde" which was followed by more live music as the evening continued.
