On Wednesday-2-April the Bogota Public School
District held am on-line townhall meeting. This was to explain the upcoming
redistricting of the Bogota Schools. This was led by Superintendent
Mr. Damian Kennedy, Director of Planning Mr. Samuel Chang, with Steen
Principal Ms. Kelly DeCongelio, Bixby Principal Ms. Priscilla Ortiz, and
Supervisor of Early Childhood Ms. Kathleen Molina. The video of this meeting was
posted on the District’s You Tube on Friday-11-April.
Superintendent Kennedy said that part of the Referendum past in June- 2023 included funding to renovate Bixby School to allow the movement the Pre-School classes in Steen School to Bixby School. The Pre-Schools in Trinity and Bogart will stay the same.
Starting in the 2025-26 School Year: The main element of this plan is to have Bixby School to house Pre-School to Second Grade Students. Steen School will now be used for the grades from Third to Fifth Grades. The Middle School will remain with grades Sixth and Seventh. With the High School having grades eight to twelve. Some of the advantages of these changes will be to improve the curriculum and instruction in Bixby and Steen schools. Combining the grades in the same building will allow for smaller classroom size, and to have a uniform learning plan for all Students. Another benefit is to have the events in either school be more age appropriate for the Student body in those schools. There will also be a projected saving in the purchasing of Educational supplies and equipment.
To make the transition smoother for both the Students and Families, a number of “Field Trips” to what will be the newer school is being planned. The District is already working with the Bogota Police Department to create more effected traffic patterns around the grade schools.
Superintendent Kennedy also talked about proposing a time change for Bixby and Steen schools by making them 5 to 15 minutes later than the current time. He reminded the viewers that the grade schools are accepting Students a half hour early for Families that have signed up for breakfast. Another proposal is to create a free shuttle bus service between Bixby and Steen for both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. School Staff members will supervise the movement of Students getting on and off the buses.
