On Thursday -1-August the Emergency Services Youth Academy in Bogota held their assessment day for the recruits of Class 08. This day and all other Academy Duty Days will be again held in Bogota High School. The Academy recruits trickled in and took seats on the Spear Gym bleachers. Program Director Sgt Craig Lynch talk to some of the arrives to welcome the first year Student, and welcome back those who are looking to be a second or third Cadet. New Program Administrator Elizabeth Wieskus started the day’s program by taking attendance. Sgt Lynch stepped in when he noticed something about the way the recruits were responding. He started by saying that one of the goals of this day was to learn about the recruits physical abilities. He then explained what will be expected of the Students if they want to be apart of Class 08. The points he made were that all answers should be made in a loud and clear voice so an Instructor could hear the response. Another was that members of Class 08 are expected to obey command with a purpose and as soon as possible. Sgt. Lynch also shared the most important secret to be successful as a member of the Youth Academy. That is to do what is asked the first time, as soon as possible, and to the best of one’s ability. He said that following those simple rules, and listening to the Instructors will make Emergency Services Youth Academy one of the most rewarding and memorable event of their lives. When a successful role call was accomplished the assessments began.
The first activity was a session of warm-up exercises. . The recruits were divided into for groups with each one starting with a different exercise. The Students were then given timed test on three types of standard exercises. They rotated through Sit-ups, Push-up, and Mountain Climbers while the fourth group was given a short general knowledge quiz. The recruits were told they are only competing against themselves, and to do their best with each task given. They results they posted today will be compared to how they perform during the Academy. This will show how, in only two short weeks, they have taken the opportunity to grow as a person. When the final exercises were finish the recruits again assembled on the bleachers. Sgt. Lynch and Ms Wieskus talked with the recruits and told them some of the things that will be expected of them. The first point was there is no later. Duty Day will start at 7:30a and there will be zero tolerance for not being on time. This is so the recruits can learn to take responsibility for themselves.The Students were also introduced to just some of the instructors. One was on video without facing the camera. His message to the recruits was that Orientation starts at 07:30 and they should be prepared to start at that time.
Sgt. Lynch and Ms Wieskus spoke to reinforced the statements they were given earlier so they can make the most of their time at the Academy.
Duty Day 1 Orientation Day Friday-1-August at Bogota High School. The recruits need to be dropped of at the base of the upper parking lot located at 1 Henry Luthin Pl. The call time is 7:30.
