21- July-2014

 Some events happening in and around Bogota for the week starting Monday- 21-July.

 On Tuesday 22-July the Bogota Police Emergency Service Youth Academy will be holding their Graduation for Class 04. This will take place in the Gym at Steen School. This is open to the public. While this is for the Families of the Cadet to see their Children graduate from one of the finest Youth Academy's in New Jersey. This is open to the public so any resident of Bogota can see and learn what these Cadets have done for the past eight days.  Some of these Cadet may go on to positions of leadership in the future, and this is where it will begin. The ceremony will begin at 7:00p. Steen School Gym is located off of Orchard Terrace Bogota, NJ. 

On Wednesday to Friday 23-25 July Cover Stitches will be at the Bogota High School with uniforms for sale. This will take place again on Weds.-Fri 13-15 August. Both times will be from 2:00p to 7:00p.
 Uniforms for both the Junior High School ( 7th& 8th grades) and the Senior High School ( grades 9-12) will be able to be purchased.
   Shirts and fleece pullovers (with the school logo), shorts, slacks, skirts and Capri pants in colors beige or black by Dickies brand, are only permitted.  Pants may be purchased through this vendor or any other that carries the Dickies brand.   Hooded sweatshirts and “Skinny” pants are not permitted.
   7-8th grade students must wear a gold colored shirt with the school emblem.  9-12th grade students have the option of purple, black or grey colored shirts with the school emblem. For more information please visit their web site at: www.backtoschooluniformstore.com

  The City of Hackensack will start it's Summer concert series with  The Infernos. This will take place at the Courthouse Green located across the street from the Bergen County Court House located at Main & Court Sts. Wednesday-23- July
Ridgefield Park, NJ  
   The next of the McGowan Park Summer Concert Series features a performance by  Larry Umana & the Larry's Latin Jazz project. The Concert is schedule to start at 7:00p, with a rain date of the following day at the same time. Admission is free of charge,but it is recommended to bring a lawn chair, or blanket.  This year Rosie's Weenie Wagon will be parked at curbside for food.

Watch or join in old-fashioned country dancing to the musical accompaniment of Ridley and Ann Enslow on fiddle and hammered dulcimer. Dance Mistress Denise Piccino will instruct eager beginners in basic steps and movements at the start of the evening. Dancing continues until 9:30 PM, when guests may partake of lemonade, light refreshments. Elm Ave. Sidewalks

20- July-2014
   Earlier in the year  a grant from  Bergen County,  for community development was awarded to repair the sidewalks along Elm Ave. The area to be done was both sides of Elm Ave from W. Main Street south to River Rd.  The first part of this project was the removal of a number of trees that had started to grow into the old sidewalk damaging the concrete & slate slab.  These trees are scheduled to be replaced as part of the repair, but under a different grant. When the trees were cleared construction crews began removing the old and damage part of the sidewalks.  Sections that were recently replace, or found to be in satisfactory condition were not worked on. Any sidewalk that was made of slate were removed.  Through May, weather  permitting, the work moved along smoothly. The process progressed until the entire Eastern sidewalks on Elm Ave. to W.Main St.had been finished  so work began on the Western sidewalks on Elm Ave. However pace of the work had started to slow down. Some driveway aprons were not completed while others were. Driveway themselves that need to be cut in order to create a straight sidewalk were not filled in with asphalt leaving gaps in the driveway. Some of those driveway are still incomplete as of 19- July. Some lawn & shrubbery that also needed to be moved in the process has also been left unfixed, making it difficult for some homeowners to do necessary lawn work. There are still piles of trash, and mulch from the cut trees also on some of the easements between  the side walkway & the street.
  When the construction company was contacted, it was relayed that the all of the County's allocated grant money has been used.  As for the sidewalk themselves 1/4 of them have not been replaced. The western part of Elm Ave from McDougall Lane to W. Main St are still in their original condition.  They are maked to which section needed to be replaced and even one section that has been left empty since it had to be dug up for tree removal. When Borough Administrator August Greiner  was contracted, on 14-July, he knew of the problem and informed Bogota Blog that the contractor  was going to finish patching what was needed and to clear their equipment. As of 20-July driveways have not been filled, and debris & equipment is still left along Elm Ave, and at the intersection of Elm & Munn Sts.
  The sidewalks that have been completed are straight and smooth, and the apron to the street have been made in such a way that the flow of water from rain, and later snow melt should move away instead of pooling onto the sidewalks. But, with more scheduled work to be done on Elm Ave at River road traffic on Elm Ave may be increased. If homeowners can not move their vehicles into their own driveways this may cause an unsafe situation and limit access for Emergency Vehicles. Another concern will be when schools are open again in the Fall, a number of Student will need to walk on either side of Elm Ave. safely.
   It would be unfair for the Borough to have to finish this project, since it started with a grant of the Bergen County, but the Borough needs to help find a solution along with the contractor and Bergen County.

Bixby Playground

19- July-2014

   On Friday  18-July Parents,  Teachers, & some former Students met in  the playground of Bixby School to freshen-up the appearance of the school yard. After a quick sweep of the areas to be painted, stencils of HopStock, and Foursquare board were laid out to be painted. The stencils were on loan from Steen School who painted their playground last Summer. Parents & Teachers  were joined by Bogota Mayor Tito Jackson and started painting the new play areas. While this was going on on the Eastern end of the yard Kindergarten Teacher Mr. Passaretti started to sketch an out line of a Bulldog. Along the concrete ribbon that runs around the building Leonardo Garcia tape stencil lettering  to have some inspiration be painted in. One phrase was " Be A Friend" placed above the Buddy Bench a remind the Students that sometime everybody needs a Friend.
  Friday was the first  part of sprucing up the Playground. The next step is to patch the Basketball court and repaint those lines. Another project is to powerwash the concrete the retaining walls to the lower classroom, and to paint the steps that lead from the Gym.
  This was done with private donations along with funds raised by the PTA throughout the year. The labor was volunteered by Parents & Staff.
