On Monday-25-May, the morning started with the Bogota Volunteer Fire Department holding their Remembrance Ceremony at the memorials in Borough Hall Park. With members of the department standing by. Father Scott Attanasio, of St. Joseph's Church gave a prayer to remember those Fire Fighters now longer alive, and to protect all the Women and Men who serve the Borough and Country.
After this the main ceremony was move to the Bogota Senior Center, due to the weather conditions.
This began with a benediction from Father Attanasio. Next VFW Post # 5561 Commander Mr. Alex Hernandez thanked everyone in attendance. He then called for the Bogota Police Department Honor Guard to post up in the front of the room. This was followed by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
After
that Bogota High School Student Mr. Jared Clark sang
the National Anthem. Next, Bogota Mayor Ms. Daniele Fede addressed those in
attendance. She talked about what Memorial Day meant to Bogota. Then as
Commander Hernandez gave his Address. He said that Memorial Day is to remember
and honor those Armed Forces personnel who died while station in a war zone, or
other combat unit.
Next a wreath was placed to
remember those service personnel who are Prisoners of War or Missing In Action. This was accompanied by Bagpiper Mr. Mike
Sorrentino leading Ms. Marianne Pigoncelli to place the wreath in the front of the room.
This was followed by the reading of the names of the Citizens from Bogota, who served in the Armed Forces and are now “Absent.” The names were read as a drum, and a bell were played after each name. Then a poppy blossom was added to a floral cross.
The event ended with Deacon Kevin Regan reciting a closing prayer
