School Rankings

 As another school years has past a few items about the schools, and students of the Bogota Public Schools. This blog has chronicled the athletic achievements of the sports team from Bogota,  another part of the story is the hard work these young women & men put in during class time. In an 19- April article in the Bogota Bulletin ( Bogota Bulletin story)  tells the story of how  Bixby school scored  high in academic achievement not only among the other schools in the Borough, but to similar size schools in the neighboring towns.  Both Steen , and Bixby school higher then the state avg. in the JerseyCAN  rankings. The Middle section of Bogota schools also scored higher then the state avg. The only school to do less than the state avg. was the High School section. It ranked lower several points lower then the state avg. However, it was almost five full point higher in it's graduation rate at 91.7 % of the student graduating High School.
   The Bogota High School was also ranked nationally in the recent Newsweek poll of top public High Schools in the Country. To start with, Newsweek ask 5,000 school in the United States to join in the survey. Out of those only 2,500 responded to the poll,  when the top 2,000  were announced. Bogota came in at number 1,361 out of schools in the nation. Within the state of New Jersey there are 392 public High Schools, Bogota came in at number 84. And in Bergen County alone Bogota placed 17 of the 47 other public High Schools in the County.  ( Not all the schools in New Jersey took part in the Newsweek Survey) But the Bogota School district was confident in their students ability to have them  go up against some of the largest districts in the state & nation.
   Just another example of what a small town in Northern New Jersey  can be proud of.

       Last Thursday the E. Roy Bixby school in Bogota held their Graduation Ceremonies for their Sixth Grade Class. This was one part of a three day event honoring the Class of 2013.
     On Wednesday 26- June  the school held their Academic Awards presentation, then on Thursday 27- June the Graduation Ceremonies were held. The students processed to the stage  singing  " You Raise Me Up" instead of the traditional " Pomp & Circumstances"  Writing contest winner  Miss Savannah  Ciriaco, and Mr. Jordy Nunez spoke to their classmates about growing up together at Bixby School.
   The following day the school held a Graduating Breakfast for the  Students to end their career at Bixby. This was a chance to thank Ms. Diane Taglibue  for years of service to the Students, and other Faculty members of Bixby School. Also honored was Mr. Sinclair on his "Teacher of the Year" award. At the breakfast school yearbooks were distributive, giving the students a chance to write well -wishes to their friend, & classmate. Along with a gift bag to each student to help them prepare for their next step entering Middle School.

Bogota Day 2013

 On  Saturday the next chapter of Bogota Day opened, it started with the official ribbon cutting for the new band shell in Olsen Park.  There were rides, and bounce jumps for the children, and small train ride that took a lap around the west parking lot , and over the environmental walk bridge.  Local groups, and sports team  were on hand to sell food, and raise some money. One of the teams were the three time State Champions High School Girls Volleyball squad, who brought along there trophies from the past season to show off.  Others were the he Bogota Republics (meatball heroes) and Bogota Democratic ( Empanadas )  with hamburgers from the Band parents in between.
   Music through out the day was provided by D.J. Eddie Acosta which lead up to the head line act of "The Bad Parts" A quartet one of whose member played a number of brass instruments to give them a unique   sound. On what could have been an awkward moments of being up stage at the beginning of their second set the band had some fun with it. A Volleyball net was set-up during the break, and still going on as the band started again.  The Musician took this opportunity to have some fun with the players provided musical accompaniment for the game action. And even joined the game ( with Trombone in hand) during a drum solo.  To provide a lighthearted mood for the end of the day.
   It was attended by a steady, but small crowd  along the course of the day. However many of the groups reported good interest at their booths. One of the Organizers Nick Barese commented that they were hoping for a larger turn-out, however the mix of uncertain weather  and graduation parties could have kept some away. Mr. Barese also talked about how planning of this years Bogota Day was done in half the normal time.  The Organizing Committee for  Bogota Day 2014 is trying for a early weekend in June.  Ideally the first weekend in June a full week after Memorial Day. They would like to start that planning by the end of this year in order to get a more beneficial response from outside participants.
   There have been better Bogota Days, but this was a solid platform to build on the local party returned to Olsen Park.
