Board of Education

26-February-2020
On Tuesday-25-February the Bogota Board of Education held its second regular meeting for the month of February.
In his Superintendent report Mr. Damien Kennedy announced that Steen School was one of nine New Jersey School that were nominated to participate in the Blue Ribbon schools Program. The winning schools will be announce in September of this year. Mr. Kennedy also said that the Bogota Lady Bucs Volleyball team and the Bogota Women's and Men's Cross Country team will be recognized at the next Board Meeting on  Tuesday-10- March.
The first order of business was to open the meeting to hear from the candidates looking to fill the open seat on the board. This will fill the seat left vacant of Jim Moore. The three candidates were
Melissa Giltner, Kristen Meberg,  and Charlie Severino. The first candidate to speak was Ms. Giltner, she used her time to endorse Kristen Meberg for the position. This was followed by Ms Meberg and Mr. Severino turns to address the Board of Trustees. Each candidate was asked why they are seeking the chance to become a member on the Board Trustee. They also were asked what would be their response if the Board passed an item they disagreed with. Both remaining  Candidates said they would follow the decision of the majority and continue to work for the benefit of the Students. Then Trustees went into private session to discuss the qualifications of each candidate. When the board meeting came back into open session there was a roll call in which each trustee would announce their vote. Mr. Charlie Severino  received 4 votes, and Ms. Kristen Meberg got 4 votes. With this tie the Trustees returned to closed session to further discuss the candidates. A second vote was call for and the results were the same. At this point the Board Attorney talked about the next step guided by under State law. The Board of Education has 65 days, since the seat was vacated, on 29-January-2020. If after that time, if the Board of Education has not filled the vacant seat, the Bergen County Office of Education's Superintendent will appoint a new Trustee to fill the seat.
All the agenda items were passed.
