Bogota Junior Police Academy Duty Day #2

 22-July-2025
On Monday-21-July, the Bogota Junior Police Academy held their second Duty Day. All 41 Cadets returned to continue their training. The day started with some more Drill and Ceremony exercises.
Next came personal defense training by Police Officer Simon Sherfer. He showed the Cadets basic techniques on how to escape from unwanted physical contact. It was shown what position Somone should be to protect themselves. Also, which parts of the body, of the attacker, are most vulnerable. The Cadets were also shown how to strike back when needed for their escape.
Most of this day was mainly dedicated to Classroom work. The first lesson was given by visiting nurse, Ms. Anna Geraghty for personal hygiene. This class was separated into sections. One for the Female Cadets, and the other for the Male Cadets. When one class was in session the other Cadets took part in learning about how to use handcuffs. As well as what it would feel like to be hand cuffed.
After lunch, the Cadets welcomed Officers from the Bergen County K-9 unit. First, they talked about the breed of dogs used for Police work and the training for both the Officers and K-9’s needed to go through to join the unit. It was also explained that different tasked were performed by dogs that are trained for the specific tasks. Some dogs are trained for search and rescues of Humans; others are used to assist in subduing an alleged suspect. There are also dogs train to find illegal substances, or explosives.
The first Officer brought his K-9 partner into the Moore Gym. The second Officer would act as the suspect to be apprehended. When the suspect did not response the officer gave the command to his partner to secure the suspect. Once released the dog grab the arm protection worn by the other Officer. When the situation was under control, the command was given to release the suspect.
Then the Cadets were given a demonstration about how a Taser is used to apprehend a suspect. It was explained how many Police Departments use Tasers as an non-lethal form of enforcement.
A cloth target was used to show how the Taser is deployed, and the sound it makes.
The final speaker was Sgt. (ret.) Craig Lynch who gave a lecture on Success. He listed a few points to achieve success. One was to earn respect, this can be done with doing good deeds, having positive accomplishments in all facets of life, personal, social, professional, at home and in public. Along the need to sacrifice oneself at times. This may come from doing extra work if needed, offering to help another when possible, and thinking about what may be best for the common good instead of personal goals. Another point was how to have good decision making. This can be done by not making a decision emotionally but with knowing as many facts as possible for an informed decision. A final point was to use the Chain of Command, this is to know who is in a leadership position, and to give them the respect they have earned. This could translate into that person giving more respect to you in the future.
The duty day ended with a celebration of a Cadet’s Birthday. This was done with the Cadet facing the rest of the Class and listening to them sing “Happy Birthday.” Then the other Cadets did push-ups for each year of the Cadet’s life. While the Cadet being honored had confetti shot over himself and the Class. Then the Cadets had to sweep up the confetti from the floor.
