Food Waste

 9-July-2019
On Monday-8-July the Bogota Public Library hosted a workshop on how to reduce food waste at home. This was presented by Shoprite of Hackensack nutritionist Erika Lannaman. Ms. Lannaman  shared ideas on how to reduce food waste and  to lower the cost of buying  groceries. She explained on how planning a weekly meal menu in order to buy the appropriate amount of food needed.  Another idea is to use familiar recipes,  from cookbooks, or  favorite meal that have been made before. This again will allow a shopper to buy what will be used and reduce waste. Some groceries can be purchased with the idea that they can be used for more than just on meal. Items that can be bought in multiples could cost less per serving.
Leftover items from one meal can be used as a base, or side dish for a meal later in the week. And even a planned evening out could in helpful when most of the groceries for that week have been used. Ms. Lannaman also said that to reduce waste by knowing which items have been in the refrigerator the longest. Using older item before  they spoil is another way to reduce waste and save money.
Then Ms. Lannaman, assisted by Cassandra Lepore, created a dessert from produce that has started to become over ripe. This was a Avocado Chocolate Mousse, which ripe bananas were added to it. The purpose was to use the fruit instead of throwing it away.
Ms. Lannaman is a registered dietitian at the Shoprite in Hackesack. This location offers cooking and nutrition classes on a monthly basis.
