Middle School Cross Country

 18-June-2022
At the Bogota Board of Education meeting on Tuesday 14-June the trustees approved the hiring of coaches for the 2022-23 school year. One of those Coaches that was hired was Ms. Nicole Kelemen. Coach Kelemen will be the head coach of the newly created Middle School Cross Country squads.  This will have their inaugural season starting in the Fall of 2022. It will be available to Students in grades 6 to 8 and have both Women and Men teams.  Coach Kelemen is a Bogota High School graduate Class of '08. She ran Varsity Cross Country in all four years of school. She is currently a Math Teacher at Steen School. She still competes in 5 k races when possible.

On Tuesday 21 June there will be a virtual interest meeting for those who are interested in joining. It will be A Google Classroom has been created for students to join. The Google Meet link will be present on Tuesday morning. Students will need to be part of the classroom to be able to join the meeting. Students can use the code 6jxu2fk to join the Google Classroom if they haven’t done so already.

The following is a statement from Coach Kelemen on her feeling of being named as the head coach of the Middle School Squads, What she will try and do in her first season, and the long term goals of the Middle School program.
Being named the first Middle School Cross Country Coach is an amazing honor! I am excited to start a program where students can join to either get in shape for another sport, or just to continue a healthy lifestyle! Running is a sport that can be continued post high school. You don’t need any equipment or team to participate.
I have a couple of goals for this program. One immediate goal is to work closely with the Varsity Coaches. Coach Rochford has already helped me get started to recruit student-athletes. We are hopeful that we will have a successful turnout. He and I have already planned a brief schedule of weekly practices such as one day dedicated to training/sprint work, another day dedicated to distance running, a day dedicated to races, and then fill the remainder of the week with shorter runs. This is essentially a modified schedule that the Varsity team follows, which is the type of schedule I followed when I ran in high school with Coach Jay Mahoney. I think continuing Coach Mahoney’s legacy is so important to this program.
My long term goal is to prepare student athletes for the Varsity team in the future. Starting a middle school program will build the students’ endurance to make them even better runners in high school! By following a similar schedule as the Varsity team, student athletes will acclimate more easily to compete at the high school level.
