Steen Garden

31-August-2014

The Bogota Green Team organized a cleanup of the student garden at Steen School on Saturday 30-Aug. Members of the Bogota Green team lead by Chairwoman Daniele Fede and Volunteers from Bogota Beautiful assisted Steen teacher Cornelia Geraghty in a  Fall cleanup to prepare the garden for the coming school year. On the agenda for the cleanup was the remove of vines that had started to overgrow the arbor and the tool shed. Weeds were also removed from the planter beds, and along the building and fences. The Volunteers were joined by Bogota Mayor Tito Jackson who helped in the weed removal & also added fresh mulch to the planting beds. Gordon Kohles of the Bogota Dept. of Public Works donated the use of a dumpers to haul away the debris. He also volunteer his own time , and a chainsaw, to cut down some of the larger weeds that have grown into small trees. Fall flowers were placed in the beds to add colour until spring time, and used to fill vacancies left by trees that needed to be remove.
With the cleaner garden, birdhouse covered by the vines are exposed again. While the removal of the undergrowth  helps to keep the intrusive bug population down. The Garden is part of the Steen Garden Club run by Ms. Geraghty over the last few years. While talking with Mr. Kohles she reminded him that his son, now a Junior in High School, was in the Garden Clubs first year. She was talked about how some of the herbs planted by the Students would be used to add flavor to the Steen lunches themselves.
This effort is one part of the Borough to achieve their Sustainable Jersey certification.
Their next event  is  sponsoring a shred day and green fair Oct 4 at the Rec Center 9 am to noon. A shredding truck will be brought in so Bogota Citizen can safely and securely dispose of old documents and other paperwork that may need to be remove from local households.   The Bogota Green team are seeking sponsors and community group involvement. Green products and sustainable practices will be showcased. Anyone wishing to volunteer please contact Daniele Fede at 973-703-6578.
