On Monday-26-May, the Borough of Bogota held their Memorial Day Ceremony. This began with a benediction from Reverend Jodie Wu of Bogert Memorial Reformed Church. The introductions were led by VFW Post # 5561 Commander Mr. Alex Hernandez. He called for the Bogota Police Department Honor Guard, to march into position near the Bogota War Memorial.
This was followed by Bogota High School Students Ms. Lola Hernandez and Mr. Lucas Mejia singing the National Anthem. Next Bogota Mayor Ms. Daniele Fede addressed those in attendance, what Memorial Day meant to Bogota. Then as Commander Hernandez gave his Address, members of the Veterans Committee placed wreaths in front of the Memorial. This was followed by the reading of the names of the Citizens from Bogota, who served in the Armed Forces and are now “Absent.” The names were read by Mr. Warren Subawickrama with Mr. Michael Sofia decorating the cross with poppies. Then a member of the Bogota High School Band played TAPS.
Then another wreath was placed in front of the POW-MIA Memorial as the bagpipe played “Amazing Grace.”
The event ended with Deacon Kevin Regan from St. Joseph Church reciting a closing prayer.
