Demolition

 21-May-2025
Next in the series of Bogota Blog NJ stories chronicling the building of the new Bogota Community Center in Olsen Park.
On Wednesday-30-April the Borough of Bogota held a groundbreaking ceremony to start the work on creating a new Community Center in Olsen Park. This will replace the former Recreation Center that served the Borough for many decades.
The Center was cleared by the Department of Public Works. Office equipment, electronics, and other consumables were moved for storage.
During the week of 12-May, demolition crews began clearing the site. First, trees were taken down, the storage shed, and sign were removed. Slowly and carefully parts of the building came down. As sections were removed crews paused to clear the debris. A series of dumpsters, on site, were used for different material. The concrete blocks that made-up the structure were given a first crushing. This aloud more space in the dumpster, and exposed metal parts embedded in the blocks. The metal items were placed in one dumpster and will be able to be recycled as new metals. The concrete will be crushed down more and be used as aggregate in new construction. Other materials, wood, insulation foam, drywall, and more will go to another location to remove as much recyclable material as possible.
During the entire process, a stream of water was sprayed on the walls and debris to reduced the amount of dust released in the air. The next step is for the entire site to be cleared so that the foundation and new infrastructure of the Community Center can be planned out.
The Community Center will be a one-story structure that will house a main multi-purpose room having a Junior Varsity size Basketball Court. This room will also be used for Summer Camp, along with Student and Adult programs. There will also be a separate meeting room, a new directors office, and storage rooms for equipment. A new snack bar will be created that can serve both indoor events and offer food service to the park. Public restrooms will be accessible during regular park hours. At this time, an opening of April 2026 is planned.
