29-June-2029
Sun.-28- June, Mr. Joseph D’Angeli of The Wildlife Conservation & Education Center held a Bat Walk in Teaneck. This took place in the Teaneck Creek Conservancy at 20 Puffin Ln. Teaneck. Mr. D'Angeli had a table with information about bats and batty merchandise. The Conservancy also had a table set-up with information about the park. Conservancy Secretary Ms. Roxana Dempsey and Board Member Mr. Phil Selby were available to talk about the Conservancy.
About 25-30 people attended to learn more about bats. As the participants gathered Mr. D’Angeli answered some questions asked of him.
Then Mr. D’Angeli talked about the types of bats in New Jersey and their importance to the environment. They are the Little & Big Brown Bat, Northern Long-eared Bat, and the Indiana Bat, which is a State and Federal endangered species. He also answered more questions. One was about the outbreak of White Nose Syndrome (WNS) that infected and killed over a million bats from 2006-18. He said that the outbreak has seemed to lessen but has taken 15-20 years for the population numbers to return to normal.
Ms. Dempsey explained about the two years restoration project successfully finishing in September 2022. Bergen County funded the effort to restore the native vegetation, flow of water and creating a freshwater wetland.
The group then moved down a small path to look over part of one of the restored wetlands that were flanked by grove of trees on both sides. The group waited as dust fell with Mr. D'Angeli and
some assistants carrying listening devises that could detect a bats echolocation call. Soon multiple bats flew over for their evening hunt. Some stayed above the treetops as other swooped down to gather food. A few of the bats flew lower to the ground, this allowed the Humans to get a closer look.
At times, the bats would fly overhead, then turn to fly over the marsh again as Fireflies flashed their lights in the darkening sky.
