27-June-2025
On Tuesday-26-August, the Bogota Board of Education held their first meeting for the 2025-26 school year.
During his Superintendent reports Mr. Damian Kennedy stated that PSE&G is working on the lights at Feigel Field and has turned on the power to the CTE building which is scheduled to open for classroom work by the end of September. He added that all the instructors for the Automotive, Culinary, and Cybersecurity classes have been hired. Superintendent Kennedy also said that all positions in the District Schools are filled.
Another
point was to say that construction of the High School Auditorium and the Bixby
Gym are moving forward with plans in place for the start of the school year.
One more announcement Superintendent Kennedy made was the District plan to celebrate the Bogota High School 100th anniversary with a weekend of events starting on Thursday-23-October. These will be open to the public with more details to follow.
Another
part of the report was to review the findings of the New Jersey Graduation
Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA). This is designed to determine a student’s ability to think critically,
solve problems, and use information from what they read and write to develop
essays and to solve mathematical problems. The assessment was given to 11th
grade Student in March of 2025 to show Graduation readiness at the end of their Senior year. This was in
two parts, English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics focusing on Algebra I
and Geometry.
Summary of the results were Bogota Students score a proficiency of 87.9 % in ELA above the State level of 80.7%
In Math Bogota Juniors had a 52.5% proficiency compared to 58.0% in the State. The District response is to focus on Algebra I and Geometry readiness in grades 8-10. Provide tutoring for Students after school hours and during the Summer. Along with support for Special Education Students.
For the ELA section the District wants to continue to provide structured writing instruction, have tutoring available, and improve rigor and support for Special Education Students.
Next the trustees voted to fill the seat left vacant when Ms. Adriana Alcalde stepped down at the end of the last school year. There was one application filed to the Board and was made by Ms. Tasneen Salam. She was asked to step up to the podium for questions from the Trustees.
Some of the questions were why she applied to be a trustee, what are some of the challenges facing the Board of Education, and what experiences she has had that she brings to this position. Ms. Salam answers were: that she and her husband have had five children grow up in the Bogota School System and with her youngest set to graduate this school year she now has the time to be involved with the school. She wants to help continue, and expand the work being done to provide the best education possible. And with her background as an account specialist, she would work with Students to advance their career goals.
When the question session was over the trustees then voted to accept her as the new member to the Board of Trustees by unanimous vote. Ms. Salam will be the first person of the Muslin faith to be seated as a Trustees. Her term will continue until 2026 when she can run for a full three-year term.
All resolutions on the consent agenda were approved by unanimous vote. Items of note were the approval of a number of Teacher, Coaches, and other support positions.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday-16-September at 7:00p. This will be held in the High School Cafeteria located on the second floor of 2 Henry Luthin Pl. and online.
