Next in the series of Bogota Blog NJ stories chronicling the building of the new Bogota Community Center in Olsen Park. This is a brief summary of the progress.
In the second week of May, demolition crews began clearing the site. First, trees were taken down, the storage shed, and sign were removed. Slowly and carefully parts of the building came down. As sections were removed crews paused to clear the debris.
By the start of July, the site was cleared and leveled, this allowed crews to add the profile battens to identify the corners of the structure, including location of entrances. Then the form work was installed and ready for the poring of the concrete to create the outline of the foundation. Also added were reinforcement bars (Re-Bar) for the construction of the exterior walls.
During the third week of May the perimeter had fully cured, and crews prepared for the next step. This including a final leveling of the soil and adding a crushed stone base. Also, location of internal utilities was marked.
At the same time work was done to create a connection from the water mains and sewer pipes under River Rd at W. Main St. There were also new pipes installed under the East bound lane of W. Main St. to update the service to the Community Center and a new Fire Hydrant.
In August, the floor slab for the entire building was poured. There was also a sample section of the exterior walls that was created on site. This consists of an inner layer of concrete blocks, panels of foam insulation, then the outer layer with a finish-colored surface, which will become the final outer facade of the structure.
The Community Center will be a one-story structure that will house a main multi-purpose room having a Junior Varsity size Basketball Court. This room will also be used for Summer Camp, along with Student and Adult programs. There will also be a separate meeting room, a new directors office, and storage rooms for equipment. A new snack bar will be created that can serve both indoor events and offer food service to the park. Public restrooms will be accessible during regular park hours. At this time, an opening of April 2026 is planned.
