Application Day

5-May-2019
On a misty Saturday -5-May morning Middle School Students from Bogota schools lined up in from of the W. Broad St Firehouse to pick-up an application to be a part of Class 08 Emergency Service Youth Academy in Bogota.  The first on line was Alyssa, who claimed her place in line at 4:00a that morning. Next was Allie arriving 15 minutes later, then Marcus at the bottom of the hour. The Students eagerness was somewhat shared with their Parents who joined them before sunrise to show their support. The official time to pick-up an application was at 7:00a., and a half hour before this, Students with their Parent cause the line to grow onto W. Broad St.
As staff of the Youth Academy prepared to open the door, Director Sgt Craig Lynch  walked the line to greet the Students. He reconnected with with Class 07 Alumni would wanted to, again, be selected for the Academy. Sgt Lynch also met with first time Students asking them why they would drag their Parent out of their bed a on a raining weekend. Answers ranged from stories about what they had heard about the Academy, to wanting to explore what they to find out about themselves.  When the door finally opened Student stepped into the Firehouse and wanted their turn. With some of the Instructors there to help with the process.
Unaware as part of the morning Academy training has started even before these Student got out of bed that day. The notion that a Student would willingly forgo the chance to sleep in just to what in line will be taken into consideration.  How a Student talks and reacts to Sgt Lynch will also be taken note of. Did the Student really seem  interested to be there. Was eye contact made, did they seem overly nervous , or scared. This also was evident when picking up the form. The Student was on their own. Parents needed to stay outside and could not offer any help. The Students were told, "Keep your hands off my table." " Hand must be out of your pocket" ' Speak loud enough so you can be heard." and their response will be placed in the Staff memory when it come time to pick a reciut.
Another thing that was taken into account will be how the parents acted on this morning. Did they come to support their Student. Could they let their Children take responsibility for themselves.  What are their exceptions of joining the Academy Family.
One by one applications were handed out, and friends and Families gathered to share stories of what had just occurred. And again Sgt Lynch was there to talk to both the Student and their Families he answered question and offered advice. With in 90 minutes from the official start of the day a completed application had already been turned in. The final day to return no later than Saturday-11-May to the Bogota Police Headquarters Approximately 60-70 forms were distributed, for one of the 56 opening in Class 08.
The Academy will take place starting Thursday-1-August with an assessment day  through Graduation on Tuesday 13-August .  The normal Academy duty day will run for 7:30a to 4:00p.  The Cadets will have the weekend off.  A typical  Duty day will consist of class work and training sessions about life skills, hygiene, and community service. The other part of the duty day will involve  hands on training from all emergency service disciplines.
